Overanalysing: WWE Judgement Day 2002

By Shaun Apps

Welcome to the first edition of Overanalysing. This is will be where a partner and myself will analyse and in most cases overanalyse the upcoming offerings of Wrestling PPVs. This month I will carry this preview by myself, as I was too lazy to find someone on short notice. If you would like to be the PPV Preview partner in future additions, e-mail me at the_gr8_one1@hotmail.com.

This month the WWE serves up a PPV that they hope will win back their fan base. After last month’s main event disaster known as Hulk Hogan winning the WWE Championship, many WWE fans left for greener pastures also known as any other federation. This month they hope to make up for one old fossil winning the title with another fossil challenging him. However, Taker is a more deserving fossil.

*NOTE: Matches previewed are the ones announced as of 18th of May.

Match 1.
Trish Stratus (c) vs Stacey Keibler for the WWE Woman’s Title

They’ve gone from Jazz (who is out for 4 months) to this. Sad. They may as well have left this match off the card and put a cruiser match on instead. However, Vince knows all men are horny and knows that this will be good for 5 minutes of T & A. The feud has been simple over this, they both want to be known as the top diva in the WWE and rolling around on a mat ripping each others clothes off will be the only way to settle it in my eyes.

My Pick: And STILL WWE Woman’s Champion Trish Stratus

Match 2.
Billy and Chuck (c) vs Rikishi and ??? for the WWE Tag Titles.

I honestly have no idea who will be Rikishi’s mystery partner. Usually it’s easy to pick, as it would be Kane or The Big Show. But with Kane injured and The Big Show in the big ball of suck that is the nWo it isn’t as easy. Scotty Too Hottie is another obvious choice, but he just had serious neck surgery and will not be seen until June 2003. So who will it be? Nova? Rey Jr? Hopefully not as they deserve more than to be with the fat man. I will go out on a limb here and say someone from the RAW roster. Then they could do defences on each show, if they won that is. The feud has been simple. Rikishi doesn’t like Rico and once the Fat man gave Rico a stink face, the ambiguously gay duo would not leave Rikishi alone. Pretty obvious that this is a filler feud for Billy and Chuck until the WWE can establish more tag teams.

My Pick: And STILL WWE Tag Team Champs, The Ambiguously Gay Duo, Billy and Chuck.

Match 3.
Hardy Boyz vs Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman

The Hardys, especially Jeff, are bump machines. I still haven’t seen last months match between Lesnar and Jeff (Wrestlingdude…), but from my understanding, it is pretty much Lesnar destroying Jeff. This month should be no different. And if the WWE knows what is good for them, Heyman will have little to no ring time except for when he takes a twist of fate and Swanton bomb. Hopefully the fans will realise that it’s Brock Lesnar in the ring and not Goldberg this month, as those Goldberg chants are annoying me.

My Pick: Brock and Paul

Match 4.
The Big Show and Ric Flair vs Stone Cold Steve Austin

There is no god. This should be ONE ON ONE. Ric Flair vs Austin. That’s it. Big Show should not be here. But the WWE loves to make Austin out to be invincible and that’s what will happen here. Austin DOES NOT loose 2 PPVs in a row. I cannot remember the last time it happened. If he looses a match, he has to win a big one back. 2001 being a good example. No Way Out, looses to Triple H, WrestleMania, wins the WWF Title. Austin will squash the nWo here. My fairy tale ending would have Booker T come out and attack Flair and Big Show and say he never wanted to join them, but Austin would consider that stealing his heat, so no chance in hell.

My Pick: Stone Cold Steve Austin

Match 5.
Hair vs Hair Match
Edge vs Angle

Not much to say here. Their feud is excellent and I’m told that their match at Backlash was outstanding. The gimmick is unnecessary though as it will kill Edges career to have his head shaved and Angle would look like a penis with no hair. I’m expecting a top quality match from the two though, and I’m sure they will deliver.

My Pick: Edge

Match 6.
Eddy Guerrero (c) vs Rob Van Dam for the Intercontinental Championship

This is the sort of feud dreams are made of, too bad the WWE have barely built it up further after their match last month (Which I have not seen still…). It was a shock and a half when I read that Eddy captured the IC title as Van Dams run with the belt had barely began, but it is more interesting to see the face chase the heel. I’m still split on who will win here, so it is making it hard to pick a winner. The real winner in the end will be all the wrestling fans as this will at least go for 20 minutes.

My Pick: and STILL WWE Intercontinental Champion, Eddy Guerrero

Match 7.
Hell in a Cell
Chris Jericho vs Triple H

This WILL steal the show, I guarantee that. This feud has had an excellent build up, and is a sort of extension of their WrestleMania 18 feud. This one has me excited. The match will not focus around 2 bumps, but rather the psychology of the two. This will be outstanding and a candidate for Match of the year when it is all said and done. To me, it doesn’t matter who wins, but Jericho needs a win over Triple H to cement himself firmly in fans minds that he is a main eventer.

My Pick: Chris Jericho

Match 8.
Hulk Hogan (c) vs The Undertaker

Ugh, this is one match I am not looking forward to. At Backlash, I thought it was nice to give Hogan a SHOT at the title, then he can go on his merry way. But then they GAVE HIM THE TITLE. I was in shock. Triple H was pinned by Hogan. And after that, Triple H shook his hand. All I can say is fuck that. I have more respect for Taker than I do for Hulkster and Taker is LONG over due for his last title reign before he hangs the boots up. Hopefully this won’t drag on past the 15-minute mark as these two cannot keep up with what has become my standard these days.

My Pick: And NEW WWE Champion, The Undertaker

This PPV will be solid, but lacking. The main event will have the marks excited, but everyone else petrified at the fact Hogan may hold the strap for a while longer. Also, the WWE brought D-Lo back 2 weeks ago and started a feud with Regal over the European title, where the hell did that go? And where is a cruiser match? Helms won the title on Smackdown, so I guess the WWE feels that they have satisfied the cruiser fans. Bastards.

Hopefully the WWE will rectify their mistake and gain some fans, myself included, back.

Until next time,
Shaun
